The Roman Empire almost collapsed during the invasions of Attila the Hun in the 440s and 450s. The Huns were from the Hunnic Empire, which contained present-day Hungary, some of Germany and Ukraine. In 447, Attila defeated the Eastern Roman Empire, except for Constantinople. He attempted to take half of the Western Roman Empire five years later, but failed. He continued to make attempts on Constantinople until his sudden death in early 453. (Alaric I was the leader of the Visigoths, who sacked Rome in 410, then claimed Gaul years later. Genseric was the Vandal king who successfully claimed Roman North Africa in 429 and sacked Rome in 455. While each of their campaigns were detrimental to the Roman empire, none single-handedly brought the Roman empire so close to the brink of destruction as Attila the Hun, until the Western Roman Empire fell in 476.)
