Baldassare Castiglione's Book of the Courtier (1528) described the refined cultural ideals of humanism and the Renaissance. Castiglione outlined the virtues of a perfect gentleman- education in the classics and arts, calm temperament, good manner of speech, a warrior spirit, and the capacity and grooming to love a woman and treat her well. Though it was not the author's intent, it encapsulated the idealized values of the age and demonstrated to readers in later times what was considered virtuous in Renaissance culture.
