Jan van Eyck was a 15th century Northern Renaissance painter who was ultimately one of the founders of the Flemish school of painting. He was renowned for his skill throughout Europe during his career, even though, the opportunities for large-scale works (like those in the Sistine Chapel, etc.) were limited outside of Italy. Like da Vinci, he was also one of the earliest oil painters.
