John is depressed because he lost his job due to his paranoid schizophrenia interfering with his ability to work, and decides to go to the bar to get drunk. A man John worked with, Brent, is there with some friends. As the night goes on Brent can be heard making fun of John for being a "freak" and a "whacko." The voices in John's head are telling him that Brent and his friends are possessed by the devil, and that John should shut them up once and for all. John is quite drunk, and has trouble getting to his feet. Suddenly he is surrounded by Brent and his friends. They begin to push and shove John. John pulls out a knife and slashes Brent across the chest. The police are called, and John is arrested. John tells the officer that he hopes the devil isn't stuck inside Brent any more. If John's lawyer wanted to keep John out of prison, would he use the intoxication defence, self-defence, or not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder. Discuss which defence the lawyer would use, and why they would not use the other two options presented.
