Because the ductal cells are relatively impermeable to water and because they reabsorb more solute $\left(\mathrm{Na}^{+}\right.$and $\left.\mathrm{Cl}^{-}\right)$than they secrete $\left(\mathrm{K}^{+}\right.$and $\mathrm{HCO}_{3}^{-}$), the saliva is rendered hypotonic.
