Peter Warr (1987) described the nine key features of jobs which have the greatest impact on strain and wellbeing outcomes. Warr (2005) updated this model to include 10 key job characteristics. Known as the 'vitamin model' of work stress, the model emphasises that these 10 key job characteristics do not demonstrate simple linear relationships with psychological strain. Rather, similar to the relationships between vitamin intake and physical health, the job characteristics improve psychological wellbeing to a certain extent. However, subsequent exposure to excessive levels of these job characteristicshas a detrimental effect upon individual health. This curvilinear relationship between stressors and strain presents a somewhat more realistic explanation of stress-strain relationships compared to the assumption that stress and strain exhibit a simple linear relationship (and this curvilinear relationship is similar to the reasoning behind the P-E fit curve). It seems intuitive that experiencing some stress may be good for us (working harder to meet an important deadline), but too much stress is not good (long-term levels of high work performance are not so easily maintained).
