During prolonged starvation, the brain adapts to use ketone bodies, such as b-hydroxybutyrate, as an alternative energy source to glucose. During periods of fasting and starvation the liver diverts acetyl-CoA, derived from the oxidation of amino acids and fatty acids, into ketogenesis.
