LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) primarily transports cholesterol to peripheral tissues.  The dietary intake of both fat and carbohydrate, in excess of the needs of the body, leads to their conversion into triglycerides in the liver. These triglycerides are packaged into VLDL and released into the circulation for delivery to the various tissues (primarily muscle and adipose tissue) for storage or production of energy through oxidation. VLDL are, therefore, the molecules formed to transport endogenously derived triglycerides to extrahepatic tissues. The fatty acid portion of VLDL is released to the tissues through the action of lipoprotein lipase, which leads to increasing density of VLDL to IDL and LDL.
