Type 2 diabetics usually retain some insulin production, which helps prevent the development of ketoacidosis, a condition more common in Type 1 diabetics due to absolute insulin deficiency.  The most frequent consequence of poorly controlled T1D is ketoacidosis, referred to as diabetic ketoacidosis, DKA. The hyperketonemia in DKA is the result of insulin deficiency and unregulated glucagon secretion from α-cells of the pancreas. Since T2D patients have normal pancreatic α-cell function, they do not secrete excess glucagon and, therefore, rarely exhibit ketonemia.
