Steroid hormone receptors typically have zinc-containing DNA-binding domains, which allow them to bind to specific DNA sequences and regulate gene expression.  The DNA-binding domain of steroid hormones consists of 2 nonrepetitive globular motifs where zinc is coordinated with 4 cysteine residues. This secondary and tertiary structure is distinct from that of the more classic zinc fingers which also include histidines in the coordination of the zinc atom. In the steroid hormone receptor the domain is called a type II zinc finger.
