Conduction deafness occurs when there is a problem conducting sound waves anywhere along the route through the outer ear, tympanic membrane (eardrum), or middle ear (ossicles). This type of hearing loss may result from malfunctioning bones in the middle ear, among other causes, and does not necessarily involve the most serious form of hearing impairment, defects in neural mechanisms, or require regeneration of cochlear hair cells to be cured.  Conduction deafness is a problem with the conduction of the air vibrations to the cochlea. If the condition is caused by improper functioning of the bones in the middle ear, it can sometimes be corrected through microsurgery by insertion of an artificial anvil or stirrup.
