Size constancy is the perceptual phenomenon where we perceive objects as being a constant size, even though the size of the object on our retina changes with distance. This explains why we don't perceive our friend as smaller when they are further away.  The size of the retinal image depends on the actual size of your friend and your friend's distance from your eye. Information about distance is available from many different depth cues, which combines with retinal information to give you a perception of your friend that corresponds to his/her actual size. Size constancy is this ability to perceive the true size of an object despite variations in the retinal image.
