Hemoflagellates, including Leishmania and Trypanosoma, are blood and tissue flagellates. Some species may circulate in the bloodstream or may exist in lymph nodes or muscle. Others parasitize the reticuloendothelial cells of the hematopoietic organs. Leishmania spp. exist as the amastigote form, an intracellular parasite, in the reticuloendothelial system (bone marrow, spleen, liver) of humans.
