The American Colonization Society was founded by white Virginians who believed that slavery was harmful to both whites and blacks and sought to remove free African Americans from the United States and resettle them in Africa. It was not supported by American blacks and did not call for an immediate end to slavery. While the society did support colonization and resettlement, it did not carry out a large-scale resettlement of freed slaves. The society also believed in compensation for slave owners who voluntarily freed their slaves.
