Meanders enlarge both laterally (sideways) and vertically (downward). Over time, the erosion on the outer bend and deposition on the inner bend cause the meander to become more pronounced and larger. As the meander grows larger, it eventually cuts into the bedrock or underlying sediment, causing the channel to become deeper.
