An important advance in understanding depression occurred with the discovery that the levels of norepinephrine and serotonin (5HT) in the brain can influence mental behavior. Low levels of norepinephrine and/or serotonin are associated with mental depression, while high levels of norepinephrine and/or serotonin may be involved in mania.
