Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) can present with a similar peripheral blood picture as megaloblastic anemia. MDS is a group of bone marrow disorders that result in ineffective production of blood cells. The bone marrow may produce abnormal or immature blood cells that do not work properly, leading to various blood cell deficiencies, including anemia. Similar to megaloblastic anemia, MDS can present with macrocytic and hyperchromic red blood cells, as well as abnormal shapes of the red blood cells. Other features of MDS may include a low platelet count and abnormal white blood cells.
