Patients with a history of requiring intubation or ICU admission for asthma are at highest risk of a fatal asthma attack. Patients with moderate persistent asthma and those on daily inhaled corticosteroid therapy may still be at risk, but not as high as those with a history of severe asthma exacerbations.
