Retroviruses use viral RNA as a template, not viral DNA. They use the enzyme reverse transcriptase to produce double-stranded DNA for insertion into the host genome. The viral RNA genome is not completely degraded before synthesis of double-stranded DNA, and reverse transcriptase is often error-prone, which can lead to rapid mutation of the virus. The provirus can lie dormant for years as a component of the host chromosome.
