MAHA, or microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, is a condition characterized by the destruction of red blood cells due to passage through small, damaged blood vessels. It is commonly associated with infections (especially sepsis), obstetric complications, and cancer, but it is not typically secondary to renal disease. Instead, renal disease can be a consequence of conditions that cause MAHA, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) or hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
