In order for a treatment to be deemed "efficacious and specific," it must have been shown to be statistically significantly superior (i.e., better than chance) to pill, psychological placebo, or alternative bona fide treatment in at least 2 independent research settings. This is known as the "well-established" criteria for treatment efficacy. Publication in a top-tiered journal alone does not necessarily indicate treatment efficacy, and one study with conflicting evidence is not sufficient. Three studies are not necessarily required if the "well-established" criteria are met.
