Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) uses water diffusion in axon paths. It cannot relay information about axon trajectories throughout the whole brain as the axons must be in bundles of a few millimeters so it can only estimate large axon bundles. In general, dendrites are not in large bundles, so their location cannot be estimated. DTI is not an estimate of neural activity as that is on a much faster timescale than estimating diffusion.
