ACh can bind to both the ionotropic receptor and metabotropic receptor. Activation of the ionotropic/nicotinic receptor produces excitation of the postsynaptic neuron as the receptor is a mixed cation channel. Activation of the metabotropic/muscarinic receptor activates a G protein-coupled receptor that can have many effects.
