A 60 year-old man who has diabetic nephropathy and undergoes hemodialysis 3 times weekly. He presents today due to progressive weakness and fatigue. He cannot walk a short distance due to feeling exhausted. Evaluation shows low hemoglobin level with low iron stores otherwise is normal. Iron supplements and recombinant erythropoietin are started.
