The primary goal of new employee orientation for nursing staff is to provide the new employee with the necessary knowledge and skills to begin their new role. The orientation process can, and should, at least minimally give the new employee the ability to perform many aspects of their job in a safe and competent manner. It is not feasible, or necessary, to teach and evaluate all basic nursing care skills and abilities. These skills are taught in nursing school. It is, however, necessary to evaluate and document these skill competencies prior to the new employee's independent assumption of these functions without supervision. Although the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requires orientation, the goal of an orientation is NOT to simply meet these standards.
