In 1932, the Tuskegee Institute and U.S. government began studying 600 African-American sharecroppers to determine the long-term effects of syphilis. The study was officially titled, "The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male". It ultimately lasted 40 years and became extremely controversial because none of the infected participants was ever treated with penicillin, although the medical community became aware of its efficacy in treating the disease in the 1940s. Though all of the 399 infected participants in the study contracted the disease before the beginning of the trial, they were never informed that they had syphilis. They were also misled so they would continue their participation in the program, though their symptoms were not alleviated and generally worsened during the course of their involvement. The gross disregard for medical ethics ultimately led to major reforms in human testing.
