George Washington Carver was a notable African-American inventor, but he is not widely known for authoring social commentary on racial issues. Frederick Douglass was one of the most prominent writers on the subject of African-American civil rights, particularly for his time period. His most popular works were published before the Civil War, but in 1881, he published a third autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, which was also widely read. He revised that work for another printing in 1892, the same year journalist Ida B. Well published the pamphlet Southern Horror: Lynch Law in All Its Phases. In 1940, Richard Wright published Native Son, and in 1947, John Hope Franklin published From Slavery to Freedom, one of the most notable books ever written detailing the factual, unbiased account of African-American history.
