Aristotle wrote in Rhetoric that a woman's happiness was as valuable as a man's happiness. Women were not considered citizens in ancient Greece- they could not vote, their societal roles were confined to the home, and they could not even participate in the arts in most cases. Aristotle's view on the emotional well-being of both genders was somewhat progressive. However, some modern-day scholars have accused him of being a misogynist for casting women in passive roles in terms of procreation. His views of gender roles aside, Aristotle was the foremost Western thinker of his age. He wrote extensively on an astonishingly diverse number of topics, from physics to poetry to philosophy. In many ways, Aristotelian thought was not improved upon until the 19th century CE.
