Heracles never rescued the demigoddess Persephone from the underworld; he rescued the Titan figure Prometheus. The Greek author Aeschylus wrote about the event in Prometheus Unbound. Heracles was the son of Zeus and Alcmene, a mortal woman, which earned him the lifelong scorn of his stepmother (Zeus' wife), Hera. She frequently tried to drive Heracles mad and was periodically successful. During a bout of insanity instigated by Hera, Heracles killed his own children. He ultimately served penance for the sin by performing 12 labors to earn absolution. Regardless of his periodic failings, Heracles was a celebrated figure in classical Greece, esteemed for his masculinity and heroism.
