In 327 BCE Alexander the Great invaded Northern India, but he failed to progress further into the subcontinent because his army mutinied. The soldiers were homesick and physically exhausted. After pleading from his generals, Alexander agreed to turn around and head home to Macedon, saving India for later conquest. He died (in 323 BCE) before he could return to complete the task.
