Stoicism was a school of philosophy associated with the principles of civic virtue, and it derived its named from the Stoa Poikile, a public place on the Athenian agora where the philosophy was taught by the philosopher Zeno. The public teaching of Stoicism was one of its most marked characteristics- no other school of philosophical thought was publicly taught during the Hellenistic Period. Stoics also believed that poor judgment or moral failings resulted in destructive emotions. They valued moderation and were opponents of the other prominent school of philosophy in Hellenistic Greece: Epicureanism.
