When Ibn Fadlan traveled to the Volga River he encountered Rus men, and he considered "perfect physical specimens." Despite his admiration, he was appalled by their lack of grooming and noted their vulgar, unsophisticated manners. In his account, he was more surprised that any of the Rus men would at least comb their hair. For Ibn Fadlan, the foreign manners of the Rus people were too far removed from his own culture, yet nevertheless, his entries regarding their culture reads fairly of the people.
