Because Louis the Pious lacked the intense leadership of his father, the Frankish empire became divided after the signing of the Treaty of Verdun. With this document, each brother was able to receive their own realm, but only Lothair was able to keep the title emperor. The division was as such: Lothair receives the middle Francia, Louis the German was made leader of the territory in the East, and Charles the Bald received the western portion of the empire. Due to the Frankish custom of dividing the assets amongst one's s ones, unlike primogeniture, all the sons receive a piece of their inheritance from their father because of the Theory of Verdun.
