Francia was the empire ruled by the Carolingian dynasty starting from Charles Martel. This territory is composed of several Frankish tribes such as: Salii, Ripuarii, and Chamavi. It became divided in 840 after the death of Louis the Pious, Charlemagne's son, whose heirs were given partible inheritance thus dividing the large empire into 3 parts. Because of Charlemagne's conquests, the land area occupied by the Francia was quite extensive.
