Dissociation is a mental process in which a person's thoughts, feelings, memories, and/or perceptions are divided into two or more simultaneous streams of consciousness. This can result in a sense of detachment from reality or a feeling of being outside of one's own body. Dissociation is often a response to trauma or stress and can be a symptom of dissociative disorders such as dissociative identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder). Role-playing, willingness to act out suggestions, and loss of inhibition are not necessarily associated with dissociation.
