Significant not only as the first major human rights treaty of the 21st century, but also because it is expected to impact the 650 million people living with disabilities (10 percent of the world's population) and to provide benefits to more than 470 million disabled workers worldwide, the UN unanimously adopted the Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities on December 13, 2006. The Convention came into force on May 3, 2008, and as of July 2016, had 160 signatories and 166 state parties. The convention prohibits discrimination against disabled workers in all forms of employment and also requires proactive efforts to create opportunities for people with disabilities in mainstream workplaces.
